Winona is one of the most beautiful places in the country, nestled between towering 500 foot limestone river bluffs and the stunning Mississippi River.
Winona's rich history began in 1851, when it was founded by a steamboat captain. Positioned on a large island in the Mississippi, the lumber industry helped it grow quickly, and by 1900, Winona was (per capita) one of the wealthiest cities in the U.S. This history lives on in architecturally significant buildings and homes, and in preservation of this heritage through the city's many museums.
Winona is also a place where arts and natural opportunities are abundant. With numerous area State Parks, museums and festivals, the Winona area is quickly becoming a regional and national center of arts and recreation. On the same day, it is not uncommon to see bald eagles overhead and experience one of Van Gogh's first oil paintings at the MMAM.
