Revisiting Twain's Mississippi: New Photographs by Chris Faust

Revisiting Twain’s Mississippi features the prolific St. Paul, MN, photographer Chris Faust. Best known for his panoramic, precisely composed landscape images somewhat reminiscent of fellow Minnesota photographer Stuart Klipper, Faust is one of the most accomplished artists from the region. He is also  an inexhaustible publisher of books, which include This Perennial Land (University of Minnesota Press, 2010), Nocturnes (University of Minnesota Press, 2007) and many more.

With an artistic focus of exploring the intersection of humans and nature, the exhibition is comprised of highlights of Faust’s Mississippi River pictures, as well as a new project where he followed the footsteps of the great 19th century photographer Henry Peter Bosse. Bosse’s historic undertaking of artfully recording the River environments – which he facilitated as a member of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers – has resulted in a body of artwork that is both artistically inspiring and helpful for understanding the 19th century river-scape. The often dramatic environmental changes over the last 100+ years are evident as Faust captures images from the same vantage points of some of Bosse’s most famous pictures.
