Ryuta Nakajima

Squid and I, An Art and Science Symbiosis

October 6, 2017 - January 7, 2018

Cephalopods! Ryuta Nakajima loves Chephalopods (ocptopuses, cuttlefish and squid) and uses them as the inspiration for, subjects of, and creative partners in his innovative and colorful drawings, paintings, sculptures, videos, and photographs.

Nakajima is a University of Minnesota, Duluth associate professor of painting and drawing, who blends his interests in art and science. His work is seeking to answer the questions: "Why do we make images, where do they come from, and what is their primary function?" In an attempt to answer these questions, he is examining the origin of visual communication.  Nakajima exposes color-changing cephalopods to artificial visual stimuli such as images of major 20th century paintings, photographs, and video documentations and then collects data from his experiments to create paintings, photographs and video.
