The Four Seasons: Leo & Marilyn Smith Folk Art

November 1, 2013 - March 2, 2014

The Minnesota Marine Art Museum is home to much of the life's work of prolific regional folk artists Leo and Marilyn Smith. The Smiths' artistic output over the decades is as varied, surprising, and charming as life itself. Their inspiration is often from the natural environment of the Upper Mississippi River Valley, considering its unique character, seasons, people, rituals, history, and its special relationship with the River.

Titled The Four Seasons, this special exhibition explores the Smith's artworks related to spring, summer, autumn and winter, and more generally, the environment. This exhibition is also the premier of a new sculptural performance piece titled "Ina, Ina, Ina, Machina," which draws its inspiration from the Dakota word for 'woman' and 'earth, ' and our inherent and universal  connection to mother earth.
